UB Biology-Summer 2006
Lifes Sense and Sensibility
Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to develop a fundamental understanding of
the life sciences and provide a foundation for future investigation and learning
using Inquiry Based lab and class activities.
Biology: Lifes’ Sense and Sensibility.
We will develop an understanding and excitement for the core principles
of Biology to build a bridge into a high school Biology course. We will develop
strategies for success in each student, focused on the goal of preparing students
to succeed in future classes at their own high school and develop a thirst for
learning and understanding.
The course will begin by defining cells, the basic components to life. We
will then discuss the genetics of all living things, taking note of how this
information leads to the great richness of species. As the summer sun shines
in,
we will develop an understanding of the energy systems and energy transfer in
organisms, plant and animal. We will conclude with a portfolio of our work and
be poised to actively transport into the next academic year!
Course Objectives:
1. To develop and hone skills of scientific inquiry.
2. To become familiar with modern biological techniques through hands on
laboratory challenges.
3. To develop an understanding and interconnectedness of all species, and
the interactions that keep them in balance.
4. To learn the fundamentals of cellular organization, structure and function.
5. To develop skills and methods for use in the study of HS and
Undergraduate Sciences. Encourage students in the pursuit of science in
their lives, and further their scientific education.
