TRIO Upward Bound

Prospective Students

Upward Bound recruiting at most high schools is closed for the 2008-2009 school year. We anticipate recruiting freshmen, sophomores and juniors at our six target high schools beginning in the fall of 2009.

Who May Apply to Upward Bound?

Students in 9th, 10th and 11th grades who attend UB target schools, are in good academic standing and are seriously considering attending college may apply to the program if they and their parents or guardians meet federal income and educational guidelines. (Two-thirds of our students must meet both criteria; one-third may meet one or the other but not both.) To be educationally eligibile, the parent(s) with whom the student lives cannot have a degree from a four-year college. The most recent income guidelines are below.

When and How Should I Apply?

Most recruiting takes place in the fall (see below for a detailed recruitment schedule). See your guidance counselor for a pass to attend the Upward Bound informational presentation at your school, or if you missed the presentation or want to be sure you're invited to next year's, contact the Upward Bound office. The UB application process involves a few steps (1) a pre-application; (2) an application, including a personal statement from the student; (3) a recommendation from a teacher; and (4) possibly a brief one-on-one interview.

How can I refer a student to Upward Bound?

Teachers, community members, friends and families are encouraged to refer students who attend one of UNH UB's target high schools to the program. Please include the student's name, grade and high school in your referral. Each student referred will be invited to the next Upward Bound presentation at his/her high school. UB does not disclose the name of the person who referred the student.
