2008 SUMMER POSITIONS AT UPWARD BOUNDAll summer positions for 2008 are filled. Descriptions below for information only. Check back in March 2009.
Tutor Counselors (filled)The Tutor Counselor (TC) position is one of the most important jobs at Upward Bound. TCs bring the philosophy of the program to the students and help them learn how to be successful. TCs communicate commitment, respect for others, healthy risk-taking, and a strong sense of community. Characteristically, they enjoy working with high school students, and are compassionate, enthusiastic individuals dedicated to the ideals of teaching and helping others.
Dates (note that starting dates for staff and students has been pushed back due to snow days at our target schools):
•Staff Training & Program Preparation: Afternoon of 6/17: residential staff move in; 6/18, 6/19, 6/20, 6/23: Staff training
• Students Arrive 6/25 (morning off for staff), Students depart 8/2
• Staff weekends: usually off from Friday evening at 5:15 through Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.
• Friday, 7/4 is a program holiday. The program will be back in session beginning on Monday, July 7
• Friday, 7/18 is our Family Gathering and staff work until approximately 9:00 p.m.
• Awards Ceremony & Closing Community Meeting will be on Saturday, 8/2 (staff work Friday night, 8/1)
• Program and Student Evaluation/Dorm Clean-Up 8/4 - 8/7
• Staff moves out on Thursday, 8/7Salary: $2,100 for summer Room and board during the week is also provided (No meals are provided from Friday dinner through Monday breakfast)
As a TC, your responsibilities would include, but would not be limited to:
• Participating in staff training and staff meetings;
• Serving as a role model and supervisor for students;
• Facilitating sporting and recreational activities during weekday afternoons;
• With a partner, taking primary responsibility for a group of 13-14 students;
• Coaching students in a series of creative problem solving challenges;
• Monitoring program-wide compliance with UB guidelines, goals and philosophy;
• Serving as a teaching assistant in several academic classes;
• Assisting students in establishing and monitoring individual goals;
• Modeling and honoring the “full value/no discount” policy;
• Preparing final evaluations for six to seven students;
• Some travel required.The Upward Bound summer program is a challenging and personally significant experience for both students and staff. Our days start early and end late. They are filled with people, activities, meetings, classes and the business of daily living. They are also filled with supporting and encouraging students as well as one another, taking healthy challenges and risks, and finding delight in discovering new friends, ideas, perspectives and interests. An Upward Bound summer demands a lot, but, as a result, its rewards are great! We will begin interviewing applicants in March and will continue until positions are filled. A background check may be required.

Teachers (filled)
Dynamic teachers needed for federally funded college prep summer program for the following high school level subjects: science and math. Our classes are geared to generating excitement as well as developing skills. This is a part time position that requires coming to UNH 3-4 days per week; 6/26-8/2/2008. Pre-summer training meetings and a post-summer evaluation meeting also required. Teachers should be interested in working in a team environment and in making strong connections with students. Teaching certification not required, but high school or college teaching experience necessary. Background check may be necessary.
